Travel vaccines

If you’re travelling abroad, it’s important to check whether there are any vaccines you need to get before you go. Some countries require you to have certain vaccinations before you arrive.

We offer many of the most commonly needed travel vaccines, including the yellow fever vaccine, which can be difficult to find in the Okanagan.

To find out which vaccinations are recommended or required in the country you are travelling to, see the Government of Canada’s health and safety website.

Shingles vaccines

If you’re over the age of 50, it’s time to get your shingles vaccine.

Lakeside Medicine Centre offers both the Shingrix® and Zostavax® II vaccines which can protect you from shingles.

Shingles vaccines are recommended for all adults over 50 who have had chicken pox or are unsure whether or not they had chickenpox as a child.

What is shingles?

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. It is generally characterized by a red strip of blisters on one or more parts of the body. It is not life-threatening, but there is an increased risk of complications for people over the age of 50.

If you have had chicken pox in the past, you are at risk for getting shingles later in life. Even if you don’t remember having chicken pox, it is still recommended that you get vaccinated as it is common to get the virus as a small child and not remember as an adult.
