Every April, we come together to recognize Parkinson’s Awareness Month and the profound impact this disease has on individuals, families, and communities.

At Lakeside Medicine Centre, we stand with those affected by Parkinson’s, offering guidance and medication support.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

This year, Parkinson Society British Columbia is emphasizing a powerful message: Parkinson’s is “more than a tremor.” While tremors are a well-known symptom, Parkinson’s presents a wide range of challenges—many of which go unseen.

Parkinson’s is a progressive brain disorder caused by the loss of dopamine-producing cells. Dopamine is essential for movement, coordination, and even mood regulation.

More than 110,000 Canadians live with Parkinson’s, including over 17,500 British Columbians. But the effects of this disease extend beyond those diagnosed—it also impacts families, caregivers, and entire communities.

Common Symptoms of Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s symptoms can be unique to the individual, but are marked by both motor and non-motor symptoms. The most commonly known symptoms are tremors—an involuntary shaking that often starts in the hands.

People with Parkinson’s can also experience muscle stiffness, slowed movement, and balance issues. It also affects cognition, resulting in memory issues, trouble focusing and processing information. Patients report experiencing insomnia, fatigue, digestion problems and dizziness as well.

While there’s no cure for Parkinson’s, there are many ways to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Medication can help with dopamine levels to control symptoms, while exercise can enhance mobility and balance to help people maintain a quality of life with Parkinson’s. Physiotherapy and speech therapy can also make a difference.

Mental health and community support are also important factors for patients and their family members. By raising awareness within your community, breaking stigma, and advocating for better resources, we can help people struggling with the disease in the community.

At Lakeside Medicine Centre, we’re here for you—whether you have questions about medications, symptom management or local resources.

Let’s stand together in support of those living with Parkinson’s, not just this month but all year long.
